Local barbering apprentices, who all study for qualifications with East Durham College, have been shortlisted for a prestigious national final.
Six out of eight finalist positions in the City and Guilds Barbering Apprentice of the Year England final have been secured by East Durham College students.
Craig Harman, 23, from Hartlepool, and Jessica Mclaren, 26, from Peterlee, both work in Fellaz Barbershop, Louise Williams, 19, from Shotton Colliery and Jodie Hudson, 32, from Hartlepool, both work in The Barbers Lounge at Seraph Hair and Beauty, Edward Donaldson, 21, from Seaham, works in The Gents Valet and Lisa Stoker, 34, from Peterlee, who works in P and L’s Salon have all been shortlisted.
Entries were received from colleges and academies all across England, with the finalists being selected by representatives from the Men’s Hair Federation, TONI&GUY London and nationally renowned hairdresser Lee Stafford.
The finalists will now take part in a stage work competition at the final, which is being held at East Durham College’s Peterlee campus on Monday 3rd October.
The top three will be announced at the event on Monday, with the winner going on to receive their award alongside the winners of the Ireland, Scotland and Wales competitions at the Salon International event held at The Excel Arena, London, from 15th to 17th October.
East Durham College barbering lecturer Alison Scattergood is extremely proud to see these talented apprentices qualify for the final and believes they will put in top performances in the final.
Alison said: “I was ecstatic when I found out that we had taken six places in the final of this prestigious competition.
“All these students have just completed their first year of barbering and this will be a huge boost to them as they start their second year with us.
“We are really lucky we have a host of fantastic salons locally to help get these apprentices the day-to-day experience to push them on to this high level.
“This is a brilliant competition to be a part of and we are looking forward to hosting it at the college next week.”
The City and Guilds Barbering Apprentice of the Year is being held at East Durham College’s Peterlee campus on Monday 3rd October between 12pm and 5pm.
The event is free to attend for members of the public but tickets are required.
