Delays on East Durham roads as snow hits the region

Commuters faced major delays this morning as snow brought chaos to the region’s roads.

In East Durham one lane of the A19 northbound was closed after a reported 16-vehicle pile-up.

The incident, which happened at around 7:30am at Peterlee, caused several miles of tailbacks and heavy traffic in the surrounding areas as motorists were diverted.

One commuter who was travelling to work in Peterlee said: “The roads were bad this morning but the biggest problem is people not knowing how to drive in this weather.

“The accident northbound was just about cleared when I drove past the Peterlee turnoff and the snow is clearing so hopefully things won’t be as bad coming home.”

Durham Police’s Road Policing Group said: “There has been a covering of snow over most parts of the county this morning so please drive to the conditions.”

Weather warnings are in place for much of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as more snow and arctic conditions are forecast.
