Horden Cricket Club will be welcoming some of Europe’s leading cricketers after being chosen to the host the prestigious ‘Hilton Newcastle Gateshead International Challenge Series’ from the 18th to 20th July 2016.
NUSC, a local amateur students team, backed by Hilton Newcastle Gateshead, will take on the might of ICC award winning coach Brian O’Rourke’s elite young Irish cricketers at Horden CC in Horden’s award winning Welfare Park.
The three-match series, celebrating its 10th birthday, will be hosted for the first time in the Durham mining village of Horden after Chairman Wayne Birks campaigned to secure the series for his club. Horden Cricket Club, who are celebrating their 105th year with a series of events will now include the unique Hilton series and they have committed to turning it into a carnival atmosphere for the whole community to enjoy.
John D Holland NUSC and Hilton Series Director “We are delighted to take the Hilton series to Horden in July. Wayne, Horden CC and Horden Parish Council’s passion to host will help create something very special for the players to play in. NUSC on paper has no chance to compete with Irish stars. But NUSC plays on the romance of sport that upsets can happen and we will be aiming with Horden’s help to produce one in July”.
Horden CC’s ability to host the series was made possible after £4000 of key improvements in ground infrastructure were funded by local Durham County Councillors June Clark and Paul Stradling from their Neighbourhood budgets.
Horden CC Chairman Wayne Birks said, “I am absolutely thrilled to have the Hilton Series at the Welfare Park. It shows what Horden CC and Horden Parish Council working together passionately can achieve for the community. I am asking every single member of the local community to come be part of it, give NUSC massive support and produce an atmosphere which ensures Horden becomes one of leading tour hosts in Europe”.
The Clerk to Horden Parish Council, Paul Davison said, “Horden Parish Council are delighted to be working in partnership with Horden CC and the club have worked tirelessly in bringing a sporting event of this calibre to Horden. The Council hope that the village will take part in a fantastic community event that everyone can enjoy.”
The doors at the Welfare Park open at 10am on Monday, with full bar facilities available throughout the day. In line with Hilton Newcastle Gateshead directives, the matches will be free entry to ensure anyone, and everyone can come to enjoy the series.
