Seaham and Peterlee staff provide food for thought this Christmas

Employees at one of the North East’s largest housing associations have collected thousands of items and raised more than £550 for foodbanks this month.

County Durham Housing Group staff at offices in Bishop Auckland, Durham, Peterlee and Seaham have been making concerted efforts to boost local foodbank supplies at this busy time of year.

Workers have brought in thousands of items of food and toiletries to collection points at each of the group’s offices in recent weeks. They have also been holding raffles, competitions and other initiatives to raise £551; all of which will be donated directly to local foodbanks.

County Durham Housing Group Executive Assistant, Lucille Young, who has been one of several employees instrumental in the fundraising, said: “We all know that many people find themselves in hardship at this time of year. And foodbanks often struggle to cope with demand too.

“We wanted to do something to help, but we’ve been amazed by the response we’ve seen from colleagues who have been so generous.”

County Durham Housing Group provides 18,500 affordable homes stretching from Weardale to the coast. The group also has expert advisers who can offer guidance to tenants on everything from budgeting to benefits and affordable furniture.

County Durham Housing Group Communications Manager, Jill Ancrum, said: “We are a social landlord and it’s clear from this fundraising that so many of our colleagues really do share that commitment to our wider role.

“We support a variety of local groups, including some foodbanks, through our community funding programmes. But, so many of our employees wanted to go further and support foodbanks directly. The amount they’ve raised is tremendous.”
